    Happy Ostara

    Picture
What is Ostara? Ostara is one of the eight pagan holidays. This year it is celebrated on March 20th. This holiday is to honor the spring equinox. Ostara (also known as Eostre, and Eastre which is the Germanic Goddess) represents spring and new beginnings. Ostara symbolizes fertility, rebirth, and renewal. This is the time of year where farmers would start to plant their crops. In history Ostara was worshipped by the Babylonians, the Sumerians, and the Persians for being the Goddess of spring and fertility.
They would have feasts in her honor for the rebirth of life on earth after the long winter and these feasts were held on the Spring equinox. For many, this is now celebrated as easter and the resurrection of Jesus. Ostara is associated with many easter traditions which includes rabbits (the March hare) and Easter eggs. In Germanic folklore the March hare was a bird that pulled the chariot of the Goddess of Spring.

The Goddess learned that the bird was too fragile for the task and turned the bird into another small animal. This time one with a thick fur coat hat could withstand the harshness of winter and thus still be able to pull the chariot. Because of this the hare became the messenger of spring and a friend of the Goddess.

In Germany, people would be toy rabbits with flannel stuffed with cotton and give them as gifts on Easter morning. Today bunnies are used to symbolize spring, youth, new birth, and vitality at Easter. Because the rabbit was once a bird that pulled the Goddess’s chariot, Ostara granted the magical ability for the bunny to lay eggs this is the reason for why eggs are associate with Easter bunnies’ fertility. Colours commonly connected to Ostara are yellow, green, sky blue, pink and lavender. Which are the colours now used in the tradition of egg colouring.

Ostara and Easter are not only times for the budding of Spring, it can also be a period of rebirth in our personal lives as well. This time of year can be a great time to plant our seeds of intention in all areas of our life: Career, money, love, personal and spiritual growth.

    Ostara Meditation

Create a sacred space for yourself. You can have a small table or a large room. There is no right or wrong way of doing this. Allow your intuition to guide you. Decorate the space with flowers, eggs or things that represent rebirth for you. If you want you can also decorate your sacred space with things that represent the four directions:
    • North is earth – sand, dirt, kosher salt or even a rock can be symbols for earth
    • East is air- sage or intense are examples of the air element
    • South is fire - a small candle that can be allowed to burn until it goes out on its own is perfect for this
    • West is water- a small bowl or glass of water is sufficient
Once you have your sacred space set, sit, or lay comfortably. Close your eye and then take 3 deep breaths in through your nose, and as you exhale out your mouth, do so with a sigh. Allow your yaw and body to relax and your shoulder to drop.

Set the intention that everything you wish to bring into your life for the rest of the year, that energy is being put into the items you have place in your sacred space. Now think about all the things that you have accomplished this past year. It does not just big things. Even if it was getting out of bed each morning and making your bed. Give yourself praise and gratitude for all your accomplishments big and small. Now focusing your intention to things you wish to bring into your life. If its more of what you have already done in the past year that is just as valid as if it is something new you want to bring in.

As you are focusing on what you want to bring in, feel the emotions of what it would feel like to have these things in your life. Notice the sensations in your body. Are you feeling excited, joyful, tense? Just notice these things, with out judgement. Take a deep breath and with the exhale and sigh out your mouth relax your body again. Stay in this energy for as long as you need. When you are ready bring yourself back to the room by wiggling your fingers and toes!
